From the Pastor's Desk

Dear Church Family,

Summer is soon coming to an end and we are back to work, school and church after a wonderful holiday season. We are energized, enthusiastic and hopeful that God will bless our new beginning at the Vienna Community Church!

On Sunday, September 2nd we will celebrate our Church New Year! Do you know why the first days of September marks the beginning of the Church New Year? We traditionally think of January 1st as the beginning of the new year. However the custom in the Holy Land was to start a new year with autumn. The summer harvest was at an end, the crops were stored, and people prepared for a new agricultural cycle. It was an appropriate time to begin a new year.

According to history “the first day of the Church New Year is also called the beginning of the Indiction. The term Indiction comes from a Latin word meaning, “to impose.” It was originally applied to the imposition of taxes in Egypt. The first worldwide Indiction was in 312 when the Emperor Constantine (May 21) saw a miraculous vision of the Cross in the sky. Before the introduction of the Julian calendar, Rome began the New Year on September 1.According to Holy Tradition, Christ entered the synagogue on September 1 to announce His mission to mankind (Luke 4:16-22). Quoting Isaiah 61:1-2), the Savior proclaimed, “The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to proclaim release to captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord...” This scene is depicted in a Vatican manuscript (Vatican, Biblioteca. Cod. Gr. 1613, p.1). Tradition says that the Hebrews entered the Promised Land in September.” (

The Church New Year is a 9 month period between September and May. Our actual road sign: “Seeing the Unseen” is based on 2 Corinthians 4:18. “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” From a practical standpoint it means that before everything else our guiding force is the spiritual welfare of our congregation, God’s will for us. We would like to lift our Lord high, obey His will and I am fully confident that we will joyfully worship and serve together as a caring, cohesive, loving church family in harmony, hope and peace.

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face shine on us during our 2018-19 Church New Year!

We all look forward to seeing you again!

 Many blessings to you all!

 Pastor Gábor

The floods in Kerala, South India have been devastating, surpassing any floods in known history. The floods have also directly affected friends and family of VCC members, such as Sheila and George Philip.

As it is known by now the floods in Kerala State, India was caused by unremitting monsoon rains for 3 weeks compounded by the fact that 27 dams had to be opened simultaneously to avoid damage to the structure of the dams. This caused several towns in the state of Kerala to flood within a matter of hours up to the height of 5 feet on the night of 14th August. The search and rescue operations have ended with the death toll reaching 370 as of 27th August. The damage to the infrastructure, agriculture, tourism industry and private homes have been accessed at a staggering figure. Losses have been assessed at USD 3 billion. This is being constantly updated. Over 1 million people have been displaced! 3000 relief camps had been opened. There have been 537 landslides, 221 bridges have been damaged, and 10,000 km of roads are in need of repair. (Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief page)

Voting in U.S. Primaries and Mid-term Elections

Those eligible to vote in US elections are aware that mid-term elections are coming up in November of this year.  Voting registration has become much easier for US citizens residing overseas, primarily with the assistance of the excellent website "Votefrom Abroad".  And for the VCC community, there is a member experienced in assisting first-time overseas voters with any questions they may have. This assistance is provided on a non-partisan basis.
Note:  Even if you have voted from overseas in previous elections, a new registration may be necessary, as not all states automatically send ballots.
