Lecture – A Protestant Reformation for Women?

, ,

It’s been nearly 500 years since Martin Luther tacked his 95 theses on the Wittenberg door, in 1517. Did women in Austria experience a reformation in the church?  Women’s historian, Kimberly D. Schmidt PhD, will explore gender themes relating to the Anabaptist Reformation in Austria and the contributions of women.  The Anabaptist Reformation has often been called the Radical Reformation.  Many American Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish are direct descendants of the Anabaptists.  Schmidt’s ancestors were involved in the Protestant Reformation as expressed in small towns and villages along Inn River.

Kimberely is a professor of American history with significant interests in Reformation history. Next year she will lead a six-week study-tour, “Radical Europe:  Women and Peasants in the Reformation” for university students from Eastern Mennonite University. Kimberly is also author of Magpie’s Blanket: A Novel and co-editor of Strangers at Home: Amish and Mennonite Women in History.

To kick off what we hope to be a regular Lecture series on interesting topics, you are invited to hear Kimberly present what she discovered about the role of Anabaptist women and the Austrian Reformation. It will be held on 31 May 2016 at the VCC Meeting Point, Untere Donaustraße 39, 1020 Vienna. The presentation will be in English. Refreshments will be served.
